Auguste Baudon

( 1821-1905 )

Biography

Auguste Adolphe Baudon was a French physician of the nineteenth century who specialised in the study of terrestrial and freshwater molluscs, a field belonging to conchology and malacology.

Trained as a medical doctor, he practised medicine while developing a sustained activity as a naturalist, in keeping with the tradition of physician-naturalists of his time.

He devoted a significant part of his work to the malacological fauna of France, with a particular focus on non-marine molluscs (terrestrial snails and slugs, and freshwater species). Scientific literature describes him as a physician, author, and collector specialised in non-marine molluscs of France, highlighting his recognised expertise in this specific field.

Baudon published several scientific notes and articles, notably in specialised journals such as the Journal de conchyliologie, dealing with the description of species, their anatomical characteristics, and their classification.

He maintained regular exchanges with malacologists and conchologists of his time and assembled an important collection of shells, closely linked to his research and publications.

The preservation of several letters in scientific correspondence collections attests to his integration into the European scholarly network of the late nineteenth century.
