Artwork description

Vesuvius was a favorite motif of artists visiting Naples in the 18th century, when it erupted regularly, accelerating in the second half of the century. The grandiose spectacle of glowing fumaroles and jets of flame reflected in the bay was sure to attract the curious travelers who flocked to Italy during this period. Among French painters, the two most brilliant emulators of Joseph Vernet were the Chevalier Volaire and Lacroix de Marseille.
